Every week the contributors to The Irrelevant will share the one thing we've been into this week. It can be a movie, a book, a song, an album, some youtube video, a random meme, or twitter user, anything that's been taking up more space in our mind than it should. We want to share this with you because we like sharing things we're into. Also these are perfect things that you can consume over the weekend, so here they are:
Those Great Outdoors
Look, I know that this is 2017 and we live in the age of the Internet and instant gratification via our ever-present cell phones, but here’s the thing, there’s really something to the cathartic nature of getting outside and getting a little one-on-one time with Ma Nature. For me, this summer my motto is: GET OUTSIDE.
I live in the Pacific Northwest, also known as “The Land of Rain”, so the summer time can feel especially glorious to those of us here. We have family visiting us from California right now, and my sister said it best, “Everyone worships the sun out here, huh?” Um, head, plus nail, exactly. This winter and spring were especially rough up here because of the record breaking amount of precipitation, so now that the sun’s out, we Washingtonians are out in droves. Just this week alone I’ve explored mud flats along a local bay, gone fishing and hiking around a lake, skipped rocks on a beach into the Puget Sound, sat on a cliff overlooking tide pools and islands, and I’m not even content yet.
There’s all kinds of research about how hiking and walking and all that jazz is great for your mental, physical, and spiritual health, but let’s be real: those are super boring reasons to do something. I’d encourage you to get outside JUST because it’s fun. Maybe there’s a local park you’ve never explored. Maybe there’s a state park near you that you pass each week. Maybe your friend has a pool you can go chill by. Why not check it out and release your inner Ansel Adams? If nothing else, you can make your social media look a little prettier.
BASEBALL IS BACK! The All Star break is over. Aaron Judge has the longest dongs, Max the loudest grunts and Cano is still the smoothest MFer to ever take the field. I wrote about what I am most excited about yesterday but everything about the sport is what I live for. The end of June will bring the crazy trade rumors and last minute deals that have had me irresponsibly checking my phone while driving in the past, sorry. August will see the standings start to clear up and teams will start or continue to separate from the pack and give us more insight to who will leave us in awe down the stretch. September will roll around, rosters will expand and we will see a weird form of baseball. 20 pitchers per game,Our first exposure to many intriguing prospects that are the future of the game can give hope to even the most pessimistic of fans, except Angels fans. I got nothing for you but at least you get to watch the greatest player of all time. Then the universe’s special birthday gift to me in October, the postseason. Friday couldn't come soon enough I can't wait to watch Trout and Kershaw and Harper and Goldy and Correa and…
My Brother, My Brother and Me on SeeSo
I’m a big fan of the MBMBaM podcast and was well aware of the show they made for Seeso last year but barely watched it this week. I loved it. It’s just plain silly, wholesome fun. I admit that if you if you haven’t listened to the podcast you may not like it as much but I urge you to give it a chance. The whole concept of the show is that the three brothers take questions from the audience and give advice to the questions. What follows it the three brothers trying to make each other laugh and somehow in a roundabout way try to provide some advice. The Brothers three have the kind of relationship that I wish I could have with my best friends, and throughout the show there’s so much inside jokes and funny words and just weird references that delight the heart. Get a six day trial for Seeso on Amazon like I did and check it out!
